Helping Kiwi girls to skate and create

Women make up under a quarter of the total number of skaters in the US and probably less here in New Zealand. There’s this perception that it’s a male-only sport, and the hordes of teenage boys at skate parks around Auckland everyday can be intimidating for young girls who want to give it a go. I believe that skating is a brilliant outlet for creative individuals, and it’s helped me to unleash my artistic side throughout my life. And although young girls may want to skate too, there’s very few actually having a go - how can we change this?...

Workshop ''Design your own board'' in the Circle gallery, Artweek Auckland

Workshop  Design your own skateboard Design and create your own unique rideable skateboard. This hands-on course encourages imagination and creativity in designing a one-off art piece that you can ride or hang. Explore different techniques working with skateboard decks. All designed boards will be laminated and ready to ride! All materials are provided - blank skateboard deck included. We start on Friday evening 8 pm with reggae vibes and some drinks Saturday 15th, Sunday 16th, from 10 am get ready for the creative explosion of your/our youngsters (10 am - 4 pm). Design classes with Connect The Dots Charitable Trust in Sandringham's Community centre and in Nathan Homestead in Manurewa. We started with a lesson of graphic design and its elements, principles and through a discussion, the girls refined their ideas to be more visually focused than their narratives. Through a process of conversation, self-reflection, debate, and thinking through making, Girls to the Front culminates in an interactive, participatory event or exhibition curated by the girls to expose the creative process and their personal development.
